Great Campus
Bangalore University has six faculties: Arts, Science, Commerce & Management, Education, Law and Engineering. It has 41 post-graduate departments, one post-graduate centre at Kolar, 3 constituent colleges, 473 affiliated colleges (of which 88 have PG courses) and several other Centers and Directorates of higher learning and research. It commands a student strength of nearly 3,00,000. The University offers 51 Post-graduate courses..." So says a web write-up about the University. It is also accredited with the NAAC (a 5-star status) and is well-known all around the world thanks to its professionally successful alumni (Sir C.V. Raman of Nobel fame for instance). But ask a student what he really thinks of the University, and he will point out the administration as one of the weak links. Quite a few of its ex-students would tell you about the harrowing times they have had with the management set-up, be it a complicated issue as thesis submission, or even as simple as a bus pass endorsement. Especially in the UG courses, non-availability of prescribed books used to be a big problem, outdated syllabus is a normal practice, limited specializations within courses, late announcement of results etc., are issues that most students have had to deal with during their stint here. The examinations are held regularly on time, but the standards could be upped a bit so that they are designed to actually test a real college student. Over the years, quite a few colleges affiliated with the University have gone autonomous. On the positive side, the University has a large green campus with reasonable good facilities. Considering its history, I hope they do pull up their socks sooner than later!
